A Bit of Writing

--I wrote a vignette for english. Basically, a vignette has little or no plot, focusing mainly on character development, and the writer is allowed to break a lot of the rules of writing. If you have any suggestions or editing tips, let me know. Enjoy! (hopefully)--

I stood under the tree, amazed. Shannon said you could see the squirrels playing, if you gave them the chance, chasing each other around and around the tree trunk. I joined in their game, trying to catch a glimpse as they darted around the side to avoid me. What kind of tree is it Shannon? Why doesn’t the fruit get all squishy under your feet like under the other tree? Can we take pieces of the bark and make maple syrup? The neighbors have a tree with those pokey leaves too! I was fascinated. The tree covered the whole backyard with shade, so big and peaceful. One morning I looked out my bedroom window. Why are they cutting down the maple tree, mom? “It shades the garden too much, and it’s so big, it doesn’t fit the yard.” Oh. But I like the shade, and it’s not too big! Instead of squirrels there was a big brown spot where the roots were.

The garden, the cause of my tree’s death, seemed like it would also kill me. Summer; picking beans for what seemed like hours until my back ached and my face was “drenched” with a small amount of sweat. But it was all worth it. Corn on the cob was always better when it came from Our Garden. When the season was over, only the corn stalks remained. Uprooting a stalk, we swung it around like a foxtail before letting it fly into the leafless cherry tree, to hang there until wind picked up or squirrels knocked it down hunting for food to stash for winter. For reasons known only to children, it was the best game ever invented.

That cherry tree was half dead, with the good branches up high where only the crows could get to them. The rest of the miserable raisin-cherries were usually full of worms, and sour in any case. I think the only use for that tree was to drop rotten cherries into our neighbor’s pool. At least, that was its purpose until The Rope Swing came. Andy made it, tying randomly shaped knots and loops into a rope and attaching it to one of the stronger branches. We discovered that the otherwise unscalable tree was fully accessible by means of climbing the swing and reaching for a branch or two and pulling oneself up. We had a new world at our fingertips, in our little backyard.

--Again, comments would be great but don't feel like you have to, it's still a very rough draft.--

"What else floats on water?"

You Are A: Duckling!

DucklingThe cutest of the cute, these baby ducks are often spotted in the spring following closely behind their mother. As a duckling you will grow up quickly, becoming one of the adult ducks seen commonly in ponds and streams. Playful and timid, charming and vulnerable, ducklings are nature's very definition of innocence.

You were almost a: Frog or a Squirrel
You are least like a: Kitten or a Bear CubWhat Cute Animal Are You?

Treasurer speech/poster... not

I've decided to run for treasurer in National Junior Honor Society. However, I have no clue what to say in my speech/poster. So, I've started a list of things i won't write in my speech. It's called "Things I (very briefly) thought about, but decided against, for obvious reasons". Here are some of the ideas:

1. "For someone good with money and bad with rhymes, vote for Michael Harris to... keep your dimes?"
2. "Do you want someone who will let the money sit around, or do you want someone who will let it gradually gain interest in his own savings account?"
3. never mind. i don't have a number 3.

Oh, the braces

1. The braces have been tightened again. I chose to get blue and green alternating colors. They're not hurting as much as they usually do, which is an improvement.
2. We got a YMCA membership. We went yesterday and I am planning on going again today. Racquetball is fun, and we also played basketball and ran on the track. Finally I have something to do during the summer. Oh, and swimming. Swimming is fun.
3. I helped de-frost the outdoor freezer yesterday. There was a lot of ice, and some of the food, such as turkey, were wedged in and we could not get them out for roughly 2 hours while the ice melted. Then there was the problem of the ice melting and draining out of the freezer. We got some sponges and made our hands go numb squeezing them out. We would have rolled it out on its wheels to the driveway, but we found out that it didn't have wheels. So, our garage got wet.
4. That's all.

And I come back, 1 year later

Sorry to everyone who is reading my blog that i haven't posted for... a very long time. I kept thinking, "I should post to my blog. No, I don't have anything to write about". Well, I still don't have anything, so I will just start typing and see where that takes me :) I was supposed to clean the church today with the deacons, but when I got there at 9, nobody from my quorom was there. I called "el master de scout" and found out that it had been rescheduled to 1:30 without anybody calling to tell me until 9:05. I left at 8:50 because I had no ride and had to run. Thus, I got no message until it was too late. Then I came home and worked on choosing merit badges for scout camp. After that I started writing a blog post that said:

Whoa, free money!

First of all, if you haven't been to www.homestarrunner.com, you owe me five bucks. If you have, I owe you -$5. Second of all, pizza is good. Especially the kind with pepperoni and olives. yum. Everybody go eat pizza now if you have some. With some root beer. I'm going to go eat pizza with maybe some root beer.
